The doctors and staff at Roslyn-Greenvale Veterinary Group are committed to the health and well being of your senior pet. Pets age faster than humans, and most of our companion animals are considered seniors at 7-9 years old. It is our recommendation that senior pets have a physical examination approximately twice a year (every 6-8 months).
Research has proven that up to 20% or more of our senior pets may have abnormalities which are not detectable by physical examination alone, so we also recommend that blood and urine evaluation tests be performed at least yearly for all healthy senior pets. These tests may need to be done more frequently in pets that have a previously diagnosed medical condition such as diabetes or a thyroid problem.
With modern medicine and prescription diets, veterinarians can now take a more proactive approach to maintain your pet’s good health. In a continuing effort to give these important members of your family the best medical care possible, Roslyn-Greenvale Veterinary Group is now offering a Wellness Profile through a cooperative effort with our clinical referral laboratory. This profile allows us to test your pet for subtle organ abnormalities which may lead to the early detection of a serious disease process. Early detection and prompt treatment of medical conditions improves the chances that older pets will live longer, happier, healthier, and better quality lives.
A comprehensive Wellness Profile includes the following:
- Blood Chemistry Analysis - 27 biochemical tests which include kidney, liver and pancreatic function
- tests
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Electrolyte Analysis
- Thyroid Function Test
- Urinalysis
The results of these tests are often available the following day, and will be interpreted by our doctors. We will then discuss the results with you in detail and make recommendations for treatment of any conditions we may discover. We may also make specific nutritional recommendations for your senior pet after our evaluation is complete. In some cases, additional bloodwork or follow-up tests may be necessary based on our physical examination findings and laboratory results. These tests may include, but are not limited to:
- Additional Blood Tests
- Blood Pressure Evaluation
- Cardiac and/or Abdominal Ultrasound
- Chest and/or Abdominal Radiographs
- Urine Culture
